Girls you like from?

January 1st, 2010 | Categories: Murmur

I’ve been asked by multiple persons the same question : “Do you prefer <PLACEHOLDER> girls?” (substitute <PLACEHOLDER> by any country name you like). Well, first of all, I don’t want a “girl”, I want a woman, who could potentially be my future partner ;-) Interestingly, it’s not only the guys who rose this question, but some female friends of mine too.

My answer to above question is the following :

A: I do not care where she (yes, I strongly prefer women) is from (in other words, from which country she’s from). At least I try to ignore that aspect.
B: In order to establish the conversation, however, speaking in English is preferred.
C: It’s also strongly preferred that I could enjoy the atmosphere being with her.

My explanations for each point :

A : I don’t think I have to say much about it. I don’t consider myself as a typical Japanese person, and I already feel how little the nationality means (at least compared to the past). It’d be even more difficult to categorize the person just by his / her nationality. So why should I limit the potential of finding someone by myself?

B : While going out with someone (and hopefully having a long-lasting relationship), we do have to communicate with one another. In order to hold the conversation, I’d like to use the language which is relatively common to me. Probably my most common language at the moment is Japanese, but that would mean limiting the potential (again). I hope German will be included on the list (soon).

C : That would be probably the most crucial one.. I love smiling and laughing (doesn’t necessarily mean I like watching the comedy show all the time). This item is purely subjective and hard to explain using the words. I think good way of putting it is “someone with whom I feel really comfortable and enjoying the atmosphere”. Too ordinary to even write down? That’s the best I’ve got so far..

My hope to find someone soon.. :-P

    Hello Kira-san,

I misunderstood you as a female.
Without the youtube in the past article, I would talk to you about what cosmetic would you use,,,etc…lol.

Anyway, I personally think that nationality shows a part of personality. However, it doesn’t bother me to choose boyfriend thought. Hope you’ll find girl ( we say girl instead of woman in US. Woman imply older female I think…I’ll make sure with my friend!) who enjoy things with you!

    Hi Emi-san
    Thanks for your comment.

Cosmetic to use!? Does my skin look that bad!? :-P

Nationality : my point was try to make a stereotypical image of a person by his / her nationality. It could (and often does) show your personality, but its importance is very much smaller in one’s personality, compared to, e.g., our parents’ generation. Nationality does not always represent the environment you’re grown up in.

Could you make a guess what kind of person (s)he is, if (s)he is born in US and has both Japanese and US nationality, moved to Germany at the age of 5 and went to Japanese college? It may sound too unusual, but I’d think it’d not be an extreme case in next generation.

Girl or woman : Even norm is “girl”, I’d still feel strange to call someone “a girl”, who is more than 25 years old (likewise, I’d feel the same if I were called “a boy”) ;-)

So what if you woke one morning and realized that you like guys more than women?

Yes, I agree with you that nationality does not REPRESENT your personality and the environment you’ve been in.

(Would you say the culture you are grown up in shows a little more portion of your personality than the nationality of yours?)

However, people asking ‘Do you prefer xxx girls?” question is expecting you to ignore what you’re saying in your article but answer the question with a stereotypical image of a girl from the country.
I guess it would be hard to answer the question if you don know ‘a stereotypical image’.lol.

Yes, I certainly think so, although I think one’s personality to be modeled by other factors as well.

    > (expect to) answer the question with a stereotypical image of a girl from the country

I “understand” the aim of question, as you pointed out, but I’d still answer it as I’ve written in this article, intentionally ignoring the questioner’s potential intention, partially (possibly) because I cannot really say what those typical images are.
